The Hub

The HUB comprises a dedicated student residential complex of some 507 en suite study bedrooms and constitutes part of a potentially larger urban development along the northern periphery of the existing Dundee university bypass and campus.

In addition to the 4 and 5 bedroom flats on site facilities provided for the residents include Reception, Common Room, Internet Café and Laundry. All are contained within a controlled secure environment overlooking the courtyard, close to their apartments.

The development ranges from 4 to 6-storeys relating appropriately in scale to the adjoining buildings. The layout reinstates the original urban framework lost during redevelopment of this area of Dundee in the 50’s and 60’s. In particular the complex embraces and complements the scale of the centrally located listed church. The student complex wraps around the extremities of the adjacent road pattern, forming smaller linked courtyards within. The church, now a climbing centre, in many ways acts as the ‘fulcrum’ to the development.

The street facades of the new complex are modelled in plan and section to provide a fresh and regenerative unification of what is an important streetscape. The materials used externally have been chosen to promote a residential scale whilst reflecting the industrial heritage of the surrounding area.
