Prof. Fred Stephen

Our Founding Partner, Fred established James F Stephen Architects in 1977, having worked in private practice for the previous 6 years for two of the leading Scottish architectural practice’s at that time.

Since founding the practice, under Fred’s guidance, this has evolved from being a “sole practitioner” and more recently an LLP. During this time the practice has grown both in size and in reputation to become one of Scotland’s foremost architectural practices. Fred has been involved in numerous architectural study trips around the globe and has a wealth of experience in the field of architectural design.

Fred has a keen interest in architectural design and a passion for the profession and, wherever possible, Fred likes to maintain an overview of the projects within the office, contributing his input at the design stages which he particularly enjoys. He has extensive experience of all facets of architectural design, covering most building sizes and types.

Since 1972, Fred has had an ongoing involvement with the School of Architecture at the University of Dundee and was awarded an honorary professorship by the University in 2004. Fred has been a judge for the RIBA and RIAS Awards on a number of occasions and has been a Consultant Architect to the National Trust for Scotland, The Real Collegio de Esoceses at Salamanca and to the Pontifical Scots College in Rome.
