NCR Research & Development Offices, Dundee

James F Stephen, Architects have designed a new £20m research and development facility in Dundee, which will act as the worldwide headquarters of NCR’s self-service business solutions division. The facility has been designed as a “gateway” to Dundee, maximising the dramatic views over the Tay and Fife. The quality and prominence of the building provides a 21st century headquarters building as befits a major multi-national corporation.

Developed by Balgarthno Estates, a wholly-owned subsidiary of James Keiller Estates on behalf of NCR, the facility houses one of Scotland’s biggest R&D development groups. The new centre will provide NCR with key operational benefits and consolidates NCR’s activities in a three building campus all within walking distance of each other.

A key element of the building is its flexible work environment which has been designed to facilitate team working, a prime requirement of the proposed R&D offices and laboratory layout. The four-storey building measures about the length of a football pitch and provides 148,000 sq ft of office space. Arranged in four quadrants around a central service core, the building sits on a six-acre site with natural landscaping and provides accommodation for over 500 staff.
