Steven Anderson ACIAT

Steven is an Associate with our practice and a Senior Architectural Technologist with over 22 years experience, since joining James F Stephen Architects in 1988. Steven is based in our Stirling office where he has a responsibility for the day-to-day management of the office along with Partner, Paul Stephen.

Steven has extensive technical expertise covering a variety of projects types ranging from private houses and domestic extensions through to ecclesiastical projects and large-scale residential developments. Steven is also responsible for maintaining and supporting staff on a variety of technical resources.

Steven takes a lead role on projects on which he is involved, often being the primary point of contact for clients on those projects from inception through to completion.

Roy Clark RIBA FRIAS

Roy is a Consultant and Chartered Architect with our Practice. Roy was formerly the partner/director of Baxter, Clark & Paul (Dundee) Ltd for 19 years prior to that practice incorporation into James F Stephen Architects in 2010.

With over 35 years experience, Roy has developed a wide ranging portfolio of completed projects, with a particularly strong reputation for award-winning social housing and special needs design projects. Roy was instrumental in a number of BCP's projects receiving both local and national awards. A past chairman of Arbroath Civic Society, Roy is also a keen conservationist with a particular interest in rural buildings and remote island design/construction and has completed a number of repeat commissions over the last 10 years in Shetland.

Mike ODonnell RIBA RIAS

Mike is an Associate with our practice and a Chartered Architect with over 30 years of experience, having joined James F Stephen Architects in 2000.

Throughout the 11 years Mike has been with our practice, he has been project architect for a number of projects, where his extensive experience and technical knowledge are of great benefit to clients. Mike has worked on a variety of different types and has a particular interest in architectural design and conservation. Recently Mike has completed the £2 Million redevelopment and conservation of Keathbank Mill in Blairgowrie and it's sensitive conversion into a residential development and the conservation/conversion of the magnificent, Category A listed, Aystree House in Broughty Ferry, Dundee into a multi-occupancy residential development.

Doug Reid RIBA FRIAS

Doug is a Partner and Senior Chartered Architect in James F Stephen Architects having joined the practice in 1982 and with over 29 years experience in the private sector, has had considerable involvement in a wide range of building types and forms of construction procurement. Doug has a keen interest in design, construction contracts and building conservation.

As a result of Doug’s extensive involvement in the heritage environment he has been accredited by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) at “Advanced” level in Conservation Architecture and continues to be responsible for the delivery of architectural services for the restoration and adaptive re-use of some of the most prominent buildings in Scotland’s architectural heritage.

Doug is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and a member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and has been responsible for successfully applying for Historic Scotland and HLF grant assistance on a wide variety of projects.

Frank Robb ACIAT

Frank is an Associate in our practice and a Senior Architectural Technologist with over 43 years experience. Throughout his 20+ years with James F Stephen Architects, Frank's technical expertise has been put to good use on a variety of projects ranging from industrial/commercial premises and large scale residential developments to private houses and domestic extensions.

Frank is an active member of our in-house CDM sub-group and is responsible for maintaining and supporting staff on a variety of technical resources, including the Technical Standards (Building Regulations) and ensuring that our in-house survey equipment is maintained.

Frank takes a lead role on many of our practices projects, normally working in conjunction with one of the architect partners.

Andrew Smith ACIAT

Andrew is an Associate with our practice and a Senior Architectural Technologist with over 32 years experience, having joined James F Stephen Architects in 1997 and becoming an Associate in 2006.

During his 14 years with our practice, Andrew's "expert" technical knowledge been hugely beneficial across a variety of projects, in particular, large-scale commercial, industrial and residential projects. Andrew is also an active member of our in-house CDM sub-group and has overall responsibility for maintaining and supporting our team on a variety of technical resources, including Technical Standards (Building Regulations) and our subscriptions to a variety of technical information sources and software packages.

David Stephen RIBA RIAS

David is a Chartered Architect and Partner in our Practice having re-joined James F Stephen Architects in 2004 and becoming a Partner in 2009. Prior to this David worked for two other notable Scottish practices on a number of significant large-scale developments.

A graduate of the University of Dundee, David has been responsible for the design of several of our practice's most recently acclaimed projects and has also led our team in the delivery of many of these buildings. David has a keen interest in architectural design and has experience across a range of different project types from private residential works to complex commercial and educational developments.

David is a former council member of the Dundee Institute of Architects and is currently a member of Tayside Construction Forum. He maintains a "hands-on" involvement on projects remaining the principal contact for clients from inception through to completion on projects which he is involved.

Prof. Fred Stephen RIBA FRIAS

Our Founding Partner, Fred established James F Stephen Architects in 1977, having worked in private practice for the previous 6 years for two of the leading Scottish architectural practice's at that time.

Since founding the practice, under Fred's guidance, this has evolved from being a "sole practitioner" to become an LLP, and during this time has grown both in size and in reputation to become one of Scotland's foremost architectural practices. Fred has been involved in numerous architectural study trips around the globe and has a wealth of experience in the field of architectural design.

Fred has a keen interest in architectural design and a passion for the profession and, wherever possible, Fred likes to maintain an overview of the projects within the office, contributing his input at the design stages which he particularly enjoys. He has extensive experience of all facets of architectural design and covering most building sizes and types.

Since 1972, Fred was had an ongoing involvement with the School of Architecture at the University of Dundee and was awarded an honorary professorship by the University in 2004. Fred has been a judge for the RIBA Awards on a number of occasions and has been a Consultant Architect to the National Trust for Scotland and to the Pontifical Scots College in Rome.

Paul Stephen RIBA FRIAS

A Chartered Architect and Partner in the Practice, Paul is the Partner in charge of our Stirling office. Paul re-joined our practice in 1998, becoming a Partner in 2003, having previously worked for another private architectural practice on a number of large-scale commercial/retail projects.

Paul has gained extensive experience leading design teams across a range of different building/project types and involving a variety of different forms of construction procurement.

Paul is a Past-President of the Stirling Society of Architects and a former Vice-President of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). Paul has particular interest architectural design as well as building contracts and dispute resolution. He is currently a member of the RIAS Contracts & Appointments Committee and is accredited by RIAS as an Adjudicator. Paul is also a member of the Adjudication Society and a member of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and is currently a member of the Stirling Business Panel Executive Group.

Rosemary Stephen MBA(Dist) FCMI

Since the practice was established, Rosemary has provided invaluable backup to Fred enabling the practice to flourish and expand since this time. Rosemary is our practice’s Managing Partner and manages the financial, marketing and HR aspects of the business, having become a Partner in 1989.

As the practice continued to grow, Rosemary completed an MBA course gaining her qualification with “Distinction” in 1993. Rosemary continues to ensure that the practice’s finances are prudently managed and in addition to this coordinated our practice’s successful achievement of our ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditations in 2010. Rosemary has also been key to our practice achieving Investors In People (IIP) accreditation in 2001, and we have recently received an award from IIP in recognition of our 10 years continued achievement of the standard.

A trained primary teacher, Rosemary speaks Spanish with ever-increasing fluency and is a former chairperson of local and regional committees and training groups within the Scottish Pre-School Playgroup Association (SPPA).
